It is not the first time and it will not be the last acquisition by a big technology company to diversify, to obtain certain technological capabilities and\/or to improve its actual services. But, why do they buy them? And, why do this type of small companies accept?<\/span><\/p>\n<p lang=\"en-GB\" align=\"justify\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">It is usual to see how every year big technology companies buy <a href=\"https:\/\/www.entrepreneur.com\/article\/304376\">start-ups<\/a> or well-established companies to expand and\/or improve their business models. Last month, several acquisitions have been remarkable:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\n<p align=\"justify\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.xataka.com\/aplicaciones\/oficial-microsoft-compra-github-7-500-millones-dolares\">Microsoft buys Github for USD$ 7500 million<\/a><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><span lang=\"en-GB\">.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p align=\"justify\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.genbeta.com\/desarrollo\/microsoft-compra-npm-para-integrarlo-github-hacer-comunidad-incluso-atractiva-para-desarrolladores-javascript\">Microsoft buys NPM to integrate it with Github<\/a><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><span lang=\"en-GB\">.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p align=\"justify\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><span lang=\"en-GB\">An old significant one for the Spaniards, <a href=\"https:\/\/elpais.com\/tecnologia\/2013\/11\/06\/actualidad\/1383736297_604474.html\">T<\/a><\/span><\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/elpais.com\/tecnologia\/2013\/11\/06\/actualidad\/1383736297_604474.html\">elefonica acquires Tuenti<\/a><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><span lang=\"en-GB\"> (2013<\/span><\/span><!-- En este art\u00edculo de El Pa\u00eds dice que Telef\u00f3nica compr\u00f3 el 90% Tuenti en 2010\u2026 pero aqu\u00ed el autor habla de 2013, cuando compr\u00f3 el 10% que le faltaba, lo pongo por si consider\u00e1is que el de 2010 es m\u00e1s relevante. https:\/\/elpais.com\/economia\/2010\/08\/04\/actualidad\/1280907175_850215.html --><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><span lang=\"en-GB\">, a former social network).<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-57532 alignnone\" src=\"https:\/\/openexpoeurope.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/Jesus-Cuesta-Art-facebook-1-300x115.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"558\" height=\"214\" srcset=\"https:\/\/openexpoeurope.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/Jesus-Cuesta-Art-facebook-1-300x115.jpg 300w, https:\/\/openexpoeurope.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/Jesus-Cuesta-Art-facebook-1.jpg 594w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 558px) 100vw, 558px\" \/><\/p>\n<p lang=\"en-GB\" align=\"justify\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">These big corporations may have many reasons for the acquisition, including medium- and long-term objectives, which can not be easily figured out. However, this seems not to be the case of this last acquisition of the GIFs&#8217; platform.<\/span><\/p>\n<p lang=\"en-GB\" align=\"justify\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">Facebook says that they will not collect specific individual information from the platform, but it will do it with the use patterns. And those patterns do not refer only to the use of the web, but to all those platforms which use Giphy through its API. An example would be <a href=\"https:\/\/slack.com\/\">Slack<\/a> (platform for chats, most of them corporate), which has already communicated that it will not send users\u2019 data when Giphy is included. Another of those platforms would be <a href=\"https:\/\/www.microsoft.com\/en\/microsoft-365\/microsoft-teams\/group-chat-software\">Microsoft Teams<\/a>. It is important to mention that Facebook is blocked in most of corporate computers, which implies in many cases, that Teams configuration may change not to use Giphy any more.<\/span><\/p>\n<p lang=\"en-GB\" align=\"justify\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-57534\" src=\"https:\/\/openexpoeurope.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/Jesus-Cuesta-Art-facebook-2-300x204.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"347\" height=\"236\" srcset=\"https:\/\/openexpoeurope.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/Jesus-Cuesta-Art-facebook-2-300x204.jpg 300w, https:\/\/openexpoeurope.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/Jesus-Cuesta-Art-facebook-2.jpg 450w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 347px) 100vw, 347px\" \/><\/p>\n<p lang=\"en-GB\" align=\"justify\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">The most important part also lies in what reasons cause that many companies are acquired by others and, in most of the cases, disappear. If we get to the point of having passed several financing rounds, the reasons seem quite obvious. The investors will want to get back their initial investment quickly and multiplied. However, when we are creating an open-source, is our final goal to sell our creation for a lot of money?
