2019 will not only be the Blockchain year, it will be -above all -the year of the open Blockchain – Jim Jagielski Open Source Chief / Co-Founder and Emeritus Chairman-Director Apache Foundation
When people mention “blockchain”, we usually think of cryptocurrencies, such as Bitcoin or even Ether. But Blockchain itself is so much more than that. The cryptocurrencies are only a small possible use of this technology, but its potential in itself is unlimited. It would be like matching the emergence of websites with a website… Potential and reality are confused with hyperbole.
In its essence, Blockchain is about creating technological bases and an infrastructure that not only facilitates decentralization (and will be seen next year) but, in fact, codifies it as a main requirement.
We have seen recently how the web (and the Internet in general) has been co-opted from being a level playing field for all entities to, instead, a space where a handful of powerful corporations make the rules and hold all the cards. The Blockchain movement is a drive to “take back the web” and return it to its roots.
One crucial way of doing this is by cooperation and involvement with the Open Source and Free Software movement. The early days of the Web clearly showed how having reference implementations, production, and enterprise-ready, available as Open Source was a key driver in making the Web ubiquitous. The Blockchain is no different. As a nearly pioneer and visionary in both the Web and Open Source, being involved in this latest revolution is a fantastic opportunity.
